Over the past few decades, there have been improvements in health care in Latin America and the Caribbean but major challenges remain, particularly in the fight against HIV/AIDS and infant and maternal health.
The HIV/AIDS infection rate is on the rise, with more than 50% of all new infections being women. Much needs to be done to address teenage pregnancy rates, which account for 52% of all births. Furthermore, every year millions of people die from preventable illnesses, such as malnutrition, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal illnesses, and tuberculosis.
To deal with these and other complex health issues, The Resource Foundation's network of nonprofit organizations in over 17 countries are implementing comprehensive health care programs. These include:
- Basic health care
- Reproductive and maternal and infant health
- Pediatric health
- HIV/AIDS prevention and care
- Diabetes prevention
