Alcatel-Lucent Foundation Makes Educating Girls A Priority

alcatel_lucent_girls_education.jpgThe Alcatel-Lucent Foundation has partnered with The Resource Foundation to support educational programs benefiting girls and young women.

The Foundation has donated nearly $225,000 for projects in Brazil, Mexico and Venezuela that will enable almost 3,000 girls to develop valuable skills and gain access to job opportunities.

“The Alcatel-Lucent Foundation is pleased to be able to work with The Resource Foundation on this innovative project to help girls in Latin America develop their full potential," said Beatrice Tassot, Executive Director of the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation. "Improving educational opportunities for girls not only touches the lives of the individuals involved but enhances their ability to help their families and communities. The Alcatel-Lucent Foundation focuses on educational programs like these because they help improve communities by enabling individuals to realize and leverage their own capabilities."

In Mexico, IMIFAP, one of The Resource Foundation’s affiliates, is providing workshops on health, empowerment, and life skills to disadvantaged girls and young women in Nogales and Mexico City. IMIFAP is training health educators, who will then educate program participants.

In Venezuela, Superatec, also an affiliate of The Resource Foundation, takes a different approach. It is offering classes in technology, human development and job skills to 150 low-income high school girls. Participants will also have access to internships and entry-level positions at over 40 companies through Superatec’s job bank.

Finally, AVAPE, The Resource Foundation's affiliate in Brazil, is a nonprofit organization that provides training and services to disabled and socially vulnerable individuals. It is offering training in technology and communications to young women in the cities of Santo André, São Bernardo do Campo and São Paulo, and links them to job opportunities. This project helps satisfy a need for high-quality training programs for disabled persons.

Through its support, the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation is making education a reality for girls throughout the region.
