Microempresas de Antioquia (MEDA) has been working in Antioquia, Colombia for over 30 years to promote a culture of entrepreneurship and competitiveness. MEDA works to improve the quality of life of microenterpreneurs and their families by encouraging saving; providing financial consulting, training, and support; and creating true business-minded individuals.
Microempresas de Antioquia develops projects to establish new microenterprises. and strengthen existing ones. Through this, MEDA helps improve the development of vulnerable communities, notably of indigenous and afro-descendent populations, in cooperation with institutions at the regional, national, and international levels. The organization provides people who are traditionally excluded from the financial system with access to credit and saving services.
General Objectives:
- Entrepreneurship: Strengthening of the culture of entrepreneurship
through vocational training programs.
- Business training: Financial consulting, training, technical and administrative assistance, and access to microfinance services to contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of the businesses run by MEDA’s beneficiaries.

2010 Achievements
Planet Rating, an independent rating company that provides institutional, social and financial ratings of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), evaluated Microempresas de Antioquia at the end of 2010. The organization received an overall classification of “4” in terms of social performance, signifying that the institution is “convincing” in its capacity to achieve its social mission.
According to Planet Rating, “There is a clear commitment to social goals and reasonable management of social performance and social responsibility risks. The institution generates a positive social impact.” The rating is one of the three highest that Planet Rating has given to any MFI.
