Bolivia: DESEC
DESEC promotes the participation of the low-income rural sector in the social and economic development of Bolivia. Through its forestry program, DESEC trains farmers on planting techniques and water resource management to help increase agricultural production and conserve natural resources. It grows a diverse selection of native seedlings in its greenhouses, which are distributed to farmers as a loan, and planted near water sources to help prevent soil erosion. DESEC also teaches women to grow vegetable gardens in order to improve their families’ diets.

Ecuador: FEPP
FEPP was founded to organize and help low-income rural communities through development programs that respond to their economic needs, while respecting cultural rights. FEPP’s principal activities include microenterprise credit and training, community organizing and potable water projects. Recently, FEPP helped to develop an ecotourism program where visitors could find food and lodging in the homes of local families, purchase traditional goods made in the community and learn about local natural sites. Thanks to the dedication of FEPP and community, the initiative is a great success.
